Green tea and nadolol (Corgard), a beta-blocker

EstablishedEvidence level: established. Shown in drug labeling or in controlled studies in people.

What can happen

In healthy volunteers who drank green tea daily for two weeks, nadolol blood levels fell by about 85% and its effect on systolic blood pressure was significantly reduced.

Why it happens
Green tea catechins appear to block a transporter (OATP1A2) that moves nadolol from the gut into the blood.
At ordinary food amounts
Yes, beverage amounts were used. The study gave 700 mL of green tea a day, about three cups. NCCIH notes green tea at high doses reduces nadolol levels, and that green tea extract can reduce atorvastatin levels.

What to do

If you take nadolol and drink green tea regularly, tell your prescriber; your dose may need checking. Do not stop the medicine on your own.

Never stop or change a prescribed medicine without talking to the prescriber.
