Green tea extract supplements and atorvastatin (Lipitor), a cholesterol-lowering statin
EstablishedEvidence level: established. Shown in drug labeling or in controlled studies in people.

What can happen
Green tea extract can lower atorvastatin levels. In a randomized, double-blind crossover study in 12 healthy volunteers, 300 mg or 600 mg of extract cut atorvastatin exposure by about 22 to 24 percent; whether this changes cholesterol results was not tested.
- Why it happens
- Green tea catechins can block OATP drug transporters and drug-metabolizing enzymes involved in how atorvastatin is absorbed and handled.
- At ordinary food amounts
- The study used extract capsules taken with the statin. NCCIH notes the effect for green tea extract; it is unclear whether ordinary cups of brewed tea matter.
What to do
Tell your prescriber or pharmacist if you take green tea extract with atorvastatin, especially if your cholesterol results change. Do not stop or adjust your statin on your own.
Never stop or change a prescribed medicine without talking to the prescriber.
