Medical disclaimer

Not medical advice; talk to your clinician. Alimentotherapy explains what published research says about foods, herbs and traditional food practices. It cannot know your health, your medicines or your history, and it is no substitute for someone who does.

General information only

Nothing on this site is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Statements here have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Evidence grades describe the state of published studies, not what will happen to you.

Before you try a remedy

  • Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or a registered dietitian first if you have a health condition.
  • Tell your pharmacist about every herb, supplement and unusual food habit, because some change how medicines work. Our interactions list covers common ones, not all.
  • Ask first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning surgery, or giving anything to a child.
  • Never stop, reduce or replace a prescribed medicine because of something you read here.
  • Never give honey to a baby under 12 months old.

Emergencies

In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number. For a possible poisoning, including from a plant, herb or supplement, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 in the US. Report a serious reaction to a supplement to your clinician; you can also report it to the FDA through MedWatch.

Products and partners

Some pages link to companies that pay us a commission (see how we make money). A link is not a claim that a product will help you, and supplements are not approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness before they are sold.
