Food and medicine interaction

Licorice root (glycyrrhizin) and corticosteroids such as prednisolone and prednisone

ProbableEvidence level: probable. Case reports in people plus a known mechanism, but no controlled studies.

What can happen

Licorice may raise corticosteroid levels in the blood. In 6 healthy men, oral glycyrrhizin (the main active compound in licorice root) increased prednisolone levels and slowed its clearance, and NCCIH notes that interactions between licorice and corticosteroids have been reported.

Why it happens
Glycyrrhizin appears to slow the body's breakdown of prednisolone, so more of the steroid stays in the blood for longer.
At ordinary food amounts
The study gave 50 mg of glycyrrhizin four times before the steroid dose. Licorice root supplements, licorice tea and candy made with real licorice extract are the forms to mention.

What to do

Tell your prescriber or pharmacist if you use licorice root, licorice tea or real licorice candy while on a steroid. Never stop a steroid suddenly; ask your prescriber first.

Never stop or change a prescribed medicine without talking to the prescriber.
